Welcome to my inaugural newsletter. In this space I will try to keep you apprised of what’s new in the window covering industry, as well as try to self-promote my business. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and explain a little about my business. My name is Don Glass Jr and I started in this business in 1980 at the age of 20. At the time I was working for my Grandfather in Washington DC. There I learned to make and install roller shades and venetian blinds, which were pretty much the only window treatments other than drapes at the time. My how the industry has changed! When my Grandfather retired a few years later and passed his business on to my Father and Uncle, I decided to open my own store with my brother. We opened a store in Georgetown and did very well for a number of years. When my brother Chris decided to go into the car business, I ran the store alone for another 20 years. At the age of 50 I decided I had had enough of the high rent and long commute to Georgetown every day and decided it was time to make a move. I now operate Shade amp; Shutter Sales LLC out of my home office and love it.
By re-inventing myself as a strictly shop at home business, I am able to more closely monitor my business and the needs of my clients. The added bonus for you, my customer, is that I can now sell the same products that I always have at a much lower cost to you. I also have more time to devote to individual customers’ needs and desires. I now carry more manufacturers’ lines than ever and have time to stay up to date on the latest innovations.
Enough said about me. The reason you are reading this is you either want or need new window coverings; otherwise you would be doing something fun. The newest additions to my line of window coverings include the Horizons line by B & W Window Fashions and Show-Case Shutters line of custom basswood plantation shutters.
B & W has a fantastic selection of woven bamboo and grass shades that can be oriented either horizontally or vertically. Their line of patterns and colors is the most extensive I have ever seen. They also manufacture custom drapes, Roman shades and top treatments, using either their own fabrics or yours. They have a turnaround time of 2 weeks or less and are of exceptional quality. They also manufacture roller shades in many of today’s most popular fabrics.
Show-Case Shutters is another gem that I have come across recently. They manufacture custom plantation shutters close to here in Christiansburg, VA. They offer custom paint and stain along with their standard colors and an unheard of turnaround time of just 2-3 weeks. All of their machinery is computerized to make for mistake free shutter panels. Their paint finish is phenomenal and their pricing structure allows me to sell them about 20% lower than the competition. They are proudly made in the USA, and I am proud to represent them.
In other news, the goliath of the industry, Hunter Douglas is at it again. They are by far the most innovative window covering company in the world and this year is no exception. There are numerous refinements to their line this spring. They include new fabrics in the energy saving Duette Architella line, a new "Counterparts" color coordination program, new fabrics in their exclusive Alustra line and refinements in their motorization options. I have all of the latest updated samples and would love to show you what's new and exciting. They are truly a great company to work with and offer the most extensive line of window coverings available anywhere.
